Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

What is ASD?

ASD is a condition that a person is born with. It is “developmental” which means that it is part of how their brain has developed and results in social and emotional difficulties. These difficulties can impact on friendships, interests and ability to manage emotions.

How is it assessed?

According to the guidelines set out by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) an assessment for ASD should involve a range of clinicians from different professional disciplines e.g. Clinical Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Assessments should include observations of the child in different contexts (e.g. school, home and clinic) and should gather information across the child’s life (e.g. historical and current). The team then meet and develop a “clinical formulation” which is simply a shared understanding of the individuals strengths and needs. This then may lead to a clinical diagnosis being made.

Who can we assess?

We are able to assess across the lifespan, ranging from children of 2 years up to adults. Depending on the age of the individual various family members and other supportive adults would need to contribute to the assessment in various ways.

Each assessment begins with a consultation to determine the most appropriate route through the service, considering assessment and/or alternative support to this. If you would like to book a face to face or telephone consultation then please contact us on

Alternatively please call to speak to a member of our admin team directly.
