Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What is it?

ADHD is a condition that a person is born with a is made of up of difficulties such as inattention, difficulties remaining focused, high levels of energy and difficulties controlling their impulses. It is normal for children to have trouble focusing and behaving at one time or another. However, children with ADHD do not just grow out of these behaviours. The difficulties can continue, can be severe, and can cause difficulty at school, at home, or with friends.

How is it assessed?

An assessment for ADHD should aim to capture the core difficulties seen within ADHD (inattention, distractibility, hyperactivity and poor impulse control) both currently and historically for the individual. This is done by meeting with parents, teachers and carrying out various observations or child focussed assessment. It can also be important to assess for associated difficulties such as learning needs and sensory sensitivities that may help to capture the full picture of the individual. Key professions involved are Clinical Psychologists, Occupational therapists and Educational specialists.

Who can we assess?

We can assess across the life span ranging from children at 7 years up to adulthood. Depending on the age of the individual various family members and other supportive adults would need to contribute to the assessment in various ways.

Each assessment begins with a consultation to determine the most appropriate route through the service, considering assessment and/or alternative support to this. If you would like to book a face to face or telephone consultation then please contact us on
